The Claw Foot tub on the left was posted by ApartmentTherapy.com, one of our favorite websites. We praise these folks because they have great and sensible ideas for decorating spaces of various size, taste, and budget. While restoration projects are fun, to make it really worth the time the cost savings has to be there.

Frank and his partners pick up the appliances and unwanted building materials homeowners and contractors would normally pay to have taken to a landfill. Then they sort, stock and sell the donated items at a fraction of their original price. This stainless steel refrigerator is brand new but was too big for its intended kitchen and couldn't be returned.

"We're selling this for just over $400 retail. It's like $1,200," he said.

It's about freedom in design

It's really about being creative and free in your design thought. Does it really make sense to have a park table in your kitchen. Sure it does, it seats 4 comfortably. The toilet facing the kitchen is daring, my mind flexes imagining how that would work when a guest has had too much to drink as dinner is being prepared. "Food smells great, pardon me."

But hey, the design is beautiful and inspiring. The stairs are especially cool. Looks like a few pieces of lumber from ReBuilders Source will get you started nicely...

Molding is a great building material to add depth and design to an empty wall. They can easily be painted to coordinate with existing decor or create a bold display. Our favorite pieces for this project are our 1"x 2"x 8' pieces of wood molding and a bright latex paint for a truly dramatic effect.

A very big thanks to our good friends over in Millwood New York. They are a perfect example of folks practicing a sustainable way of living. By donating their appliances the family was able to create the space they needed for new renovations, a whopping 430 lbs of materials were saved from the landfill, no toxins were burned to decompose the plastics, AND several area contractors have already inquired about purchasing the refurbished unit. It's all good.

Recycled Paint

Yesterday we brought into inventory 900+ gallons of paint. We received a call from an artist group who wanted to donate the remaining materials from constructing an exhibit. We also agreed to deconstruct the project and responsibly dispose of as much of the waste as possible. Here I am in the cab of a 26 foot truck. Sure it looks empty now, but this is at the end of a long long very long day. But, we have tons of brand name interior and exterior paints now, so come and get it!

RBS working with Goodwill to teach job skills

Barbara and Janae from Goodwill paid us a visit for some laughs and a bit of business. They are leading an effort by Goodwill Industries to provide practical training for folks registered with NYC's "Back to Work Program". The entire back to work program was designed to provide job development services for over 12000 people. Goodwill is partnering with the state to teach practical and hands-on job training in construction. ReBuilders Source provided paint and tiles as raw materials for their trainees to work with. Another perfect example demonstrating a market for recycled building materials. We we're really proud to be a part of Goodwill's efforts to enhance the lives of the participants. Good luck guys, it was a pleasure working with you.

ReBuilders Source Profiled: The Bronx is Building

A huge shout out to Leyla, who stopped by the warehouse last weekend to interview us for "The Bronx is Building Project". The project is a collection of still photography and short videos that showcase the positive transformations happening throughout the Bronx.

Portrait and landscape photography will showcase partcipants in their setting. The goal is to highlight those who are involved in the Bronx transformation process, as well as the people who are affected by the changes. Short videos aka "webisodes" will document interviews, real public opinions, and the importance of community change.

We are really excited to be participating with Leyla in shining some light on the wonderful things people are doing in the Bronx.

Basically, how this works. There's a beautiful historic brownstone in the Park and Broadway area. The place has been around for over a hundred years, but has been renovated to fit the modern look of the times. The new owner called us and said that she was planning to renovate the entire place and had some great building materials that she would hate to see thrown away. In a situation where allot of these materials were custome made and built into the house, we had to partner with the contractor leading the demo. With the support of the owner, we partnered with the contractor to have certain items from the house carefully removed and stowed away for our guys. A couple days later, the items will be made available in our Bronx warehouse.
